I am done living like a student.
That is it. Time to start making a home out of my flat. I have always wanted to spice up my flat and get a theme going to bring a classic, timeless feel to it but I just couldn’t be bothered to put in the effort. But after weeks of coming home and feeling like I was walking into a student digs with sparse furnishing and no character, I have decided that it is time to invest time & energy into decorating my flat without having to eat salty crackers for the rest of the year.
So first things first, what look do I want? After pouring over literally hundreds of home decor websites, I finally figured out what I wanted to do with my lounge - I want a classic, elegant and functional look.
Currently I have:
- Dark Blue Sofas which are absolutely comfortable so I don’t want to get rid of them, besides, buying a new sofa set falls under the “eating salty crackers for the rest of the year” consequence category.
- I have beautiful french windows that would let the early morning sunlight stream in were it not for the Very Dark Blue Curtains that takes its job very seriously ensuring that even stray beams are stopped dead in its tracks. The Very Dark Blue Curtains are highly approved by my bf, henceforth known as TD, who dislikes the sun intensely.
- I have a side door that leads to a balcony with the most beautiful views of Table Mountain - enter sneaky Very Dark Blue Curtains.
- A Samsung 32″ lcd screen center piece, placed on a cute little bedside table masquerading as a tv stand. Our crowning glory, because watching series & movies is our most favourite hobby!
- A writhing mass of s-video cables, Mvix cables, cell phone chargers, laptop connectors & extension cords that will very soon have an area code of its own!
- …that’s it?
That’s it! So picture this, Very Dark Blue Curtains cutting out sunlight, a few sofa pieces loosely hanging around a gorgeous lcd screen on a wannabe tv stand. Ultimate student digs.
Next, time to visualise what I want to see when I walk into my lounge.
- White/cream thick curtains (maybe with lining?) for the french windows and side door that will really brighten the room and cut out enough sunlight for TD
- A proper, sleek tv stand that can house the lcd, dvd player & mvix
- A coffee table - something dark, elegant, simple but functional
- A dresser that sits against the one blank wall
That should be enough to get the basics right. I will need to get a few bits ‘n pieces to pull the look together, but so far I think I have a pretty good idea of what I am going to be doing. Now for the most exciting part - sourcing the pieces!
The bargain hunt is on!
