After a hefty breakfast & two hours of serious weekly-series-catch-up session, it was time to head out for a day of shopping to source pieces for my home decor project. I managed to rope TD in and get him all excited about the prospect of a clean, elegant looking lounge. TD and I both dislike long shopping trips, we are the ‘zip-in-zip-out’ type so we don’t really get the whole ‘walk around the mall for an entire day’ thing & shopping malls don’t usually leave us feeling warm and fuzzy. But Saturday was a different story, I came to the realisation that I love shopping malls, I love the idea of having a gazillion furniture stores under one roof!
First store to be scrutinised was House & Home, and it had a few hopefuls but nothing really caught our attention. Next were a few boutique furniture shops. While I love some of the pieces on display, their price tags were most certainly not eye catching. I am all for unique furniture pieces, but selling your future first born’s soul to have a coffee table that essentially provides placement for a flower vase and coffee cups just seems a little excessive.
To my joy, we stumbled upon Coricraft and from the research I had done, I knew that if there was ever a shop that would make me, at the very least consider the idea of selling my future first born’s soul for a piece of wood, this would be it. It did not disappoint. I walked around ooh’ing and aah’ing at everything in the store, while TD walked behind me, bursting my bubble every time I saw a piece I liked by loudly reading out the price tag. He was my rock! If it were upto me, who knows where our future first born would be…
After an hour of blowing and bursting bubbles, I decided it was time to move on. Next, we hit Boardmans and after walking around despondently, there it was! A coffee table that looked interesting. On closer inspection, both TD and I loved it (so did our wallets). Simple, dark wood, elegant - perfect. We then spied, with our little eyes, something beginning with D! A dresser! Same wood, same finish as the coffee table. Simple, elegant - perfect! We could hardly believe our luck and we decided to get them both on the spot.
I was simply jumping out of my skin with eagerness to get back home and place the pieces but that was not to be! The coffee table and dresser needed to be assembled at the warehouse and could only be delivered this Saturday. But I can live with that…we found a coffee table & dresser we liked!!
The bulk of the shopping was done, now it was time to leash the eagerness and move on to the smaller pieces for the lounge.
After some heated debate with TD about whether the cream curtains I had picked out would actually look cream or yellow during the day, we settled on the cream curtains which is to say I decided to take the cream curtains and he just threw his hands in the air. But he put his foot down at getting a bright orange lamp shade for the brown wood lamp stand that I found. So cream lamp shade it was!
I really wanted a tall thin, metal stem lamp with a nice wide lamp shade for one of the corners in our lounge. Three shops and many many many small, short dumpy lamps later, I found what I was looking for, in the corner of Loads of Living. 6ft tall with a beautiful pastel blue lamp shade. It was the last one in stock, and they were about to pack it away in the store room. It practically screamed “take me!” when I laid my eyes on it and so I did! TD wasn’t sold on the pastel blue shade. More “throwing up hands in the air” ensued!
We also found a sleek grey D.I.Y TV stand which was an interesting project and warrants a post all on its own.
So by the end of our shopping trip:
- White/Cream curtains - check!
- Sleek TV stand - check!
- Coffee table - check!
- Dresser - check!
- Lamps - added bonus - check!
Not bad for five hours of mad shopping!

Try TafelBerg Furnishers as well. They’ve got great service both before and after the sale and they have cool stuff at fairly decent prices!
Definitely worth a look!
Oooh, nice, I will check it out next weekend! I have all the big pieces that I want for now, but I have three other rooms to re-decorate as well!
Thanks!
